ELMBRIDGE SENIORS

Formerly Known As Elmbridge 50 Plus

"For age is opportunity no less than youth itself, though in another dress,

and as the evening twilight fades away, the sky is filled with stars, invisible by day".

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Senior members of the community are able and ought to be willing to help redress the current short-termism on public, and especially local, affairs by promoting the long-term view, in all aspects of life such as housing, leisure, transport, employment and specific service areas such as health and social care. We should ensure our views are taken into account by our elected representatives by identifying and high-lighting current and future needs.

The objective of the Elmbridge Seniors is to work with and through our local elected representatives by offering informed constructive comment on common local affairs of general interest to the community. As such, we are non-political and have no ties to any lobbying group. Our councillors do spend much time and effort in researching and summarising the facts on any particular issue. They do not need a stream of criticism and complaints, but deserve independent help in balancing the advice given by officers, who may have their own agendas to work to. And it seems to many that the party system does not always help.

Amongst the 130,000 Elmbridge residents there are many seniors who have the background, skills and attributes to contribute in this way. Of course, personal and family affairs rightly take priority, but there must be a number who would like to consider it ‘pay-back’ time and offer the community back some support for their lifetime’s blessings and career fulfilment. Yet we need only some 100 to participate in our worthwhile venture of pre-active dynamic involvement.

We believe that senior members of the community can and ought to use our experience, knowledge and resources to assist the Borough Council and other appropriate groups to achieve even better outcomes for the benefit of the entire community.

Are you one of the volunteers we are seeking? If so, come to our meeting on 2pm, October 27th at the Excel Leisure Centre Walton, or contact us.
